I believe that the understanding of information that reading brings and the experience you get on discourse developing are essentials to explain your ideas
My understanding so far of reading and writing is an information exchange and how the way writers communicate an ideas become the engine of understanding any written ideas in between two or more persons
A good example could be a science class where the teacher explaining an idea greatly depends on the previous general understanding of arithmetic and physics laws and thanks to that previous understanding the students can develop their own conclusions therefor their own ideas which couldn't be possible with out their context understanding
